Metaverse

  • No real consensus on what the definition of the metaverse is beyond a mash-up of the virtual and physical world. Certainly more than just virtual 3d.
  • LFN communities are the plumbers of the metaverse
  • much more stringent round trip latency which pushes against the laws of physics with regards to distances.
  • the need for resilient synchronization are relatively high.

What does all of this mean to our projects?

  • Beth Cohen carriers probably won't just the providers of dumb pipes.
  • Muddasar Ahmed  likely to be many folks that monetize different aspects efficiently -
  • Robert Varga CDNs have been around for a long time, as is the problem of an application performing resource selection based on network-based "closeness". An example is Application-Level Traffic Optimization and the RFCs produced at IETF (https://datatracker.ietf.org/wg/alto/documents/).  Attempts with APIs have not gotten as much traction. The API piece may  need to be revisited
  • The ability to decouple some of this will be covered in a FD.io session tomorrow
