Topic Description

We will present some important progress made in the ONAP 5G SON Use Case for the Kohn release. The implementation has been updated to provide specific control loop flows for O1-based and A1-based RAN actions. There are enhancements in RAN-Sim controller and SDN-R for A1-support, and modified control message formats and policies to support the new control loop design.

Topic Overview

The ONAP 5G SON use case provides a control loop framework for selected use cases of PCI and ANR. In the Kohn release, we have built upon existing work in ONAP and OSC to further improve alignment with O-RAN interfaces. Key updates for 5G SON use case include:

  • Modification of RAN control loop flows so that we have specific control loop flows for O1-based and A1-based RAN actions. This includes changes in Policy, SDN-R, SON-Handler MS, and RAN-Sim. A1-related control messages are sent from Policy to A1-PMS in SDN-R, and then forwarded via A1 to a new A1 Termination module in RAN-Sim. O1-related control messages are sent from Policy to SDN-R and then forwarded via O1 netconf client to O1 Terminations in the O-RAN NF modules in RAN-Sim.
  • Enhancement of RAN-Sim to support A1-based action with new modules for (a) A1 Termination, (b) ran-app to provide xApp/Near-RT RIC abstraction. The A1 Termination is harmonized with OSC work, and the ran-app has an interface to the RAN-Sim controller and simulated RAN NFs.
  • Modification of Control Loop message formats and policies to direct O1 and A1 flows appropriately.
